ultimateimp – TerraMaster has officially launched the D8 Hybrid 2, a new direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure designed for users who need both high-capacity storage and high-speed performance. Supporting up to four SATA hard drives and four NVMe solid-state drives. The new enclosure can accommodate as much as 152TB of total storage.
The D8 Hybrid 2 builds on the original D8 Hybrid with a tool-free design. Improved flexibility, and broad compatibility across desktop operating systems and storage platforms. It is aimed at content creators, professionals, and enthusiasts who require large local storage without the networking features of a NAS.
TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 Combines Massive Capacity With High-Speed Storage
The D8 Hybrid 2 supports a hybrid storage configuration consisting of four 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA hard drives alongside four M.2 NVMe SSDs. Users can combine large-capacity hard drives with fast solid-state storage to create a flexible system for demanding workloads.
According to TerraMaster, the enclosure supports a maximum storage capacity of 152TB when equipped with four 30TB hard drives and four 8TB NVMe SSDs.
Performance is another key focus of the new DAS. TerraMaster states that a single installed NVMe SSD can achieve transfer speeds of approximately 1,020MB/s. Meanwhile, the four SATA drives can reach speeds of around 980MB/s when configured using an appropriate RAID setup.
The company notes that the D8 Hybrid 2 does not include built-in RAID functionality. Instead, users must rely on third-party software or operating system tools to create RAID arrays.
This approach offers greater flexibility for experienced users while allowing compatibility with a wide range of software-based storage solutions.
Tool-Free Installation and Broad Platform Support
TerraMaster has designed the D8 Hybrid 2 for quick installation and maintenance. The enclosure features push-lock drive bays that allow hard drives to be installed or removed without the use of tools.
The M.2 NVMe slots are accessible through a sliding side panel. Making SSD upgrades and replacements straightforward without requiring the enclosure to be fully disassembled.
Noise levels have also been kept to a minimum. TerraMaster claims the cooling system operates at approximately 21 decibels under normal conditions.
For connectivity, the D8 Hybrid 2 includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface offering data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. A dedicated physical switch enables power-saving mode, allowing users to reduce energy consumption when the enclosure is idle.
The DAS is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS, Unraid, and TerraMaster’s proprietary TOS operating system, making it suitable for a wide variety of storage environments.
Unlike a network-attached storage device, the D8 Hybrid 2 connects directly to a computer and does not offer built-in networking capabilities.
The TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 is available now with a starting price of $239.99. Its combination of hybrid storage support, high capacity, fast transfer speeds. And tool-free design makes it an attractive option for users seeking flexible local storage for professional or personal workloads.
