DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Gen Boosts Refresh Rates

ultimateimp – NVIDIA has released an update to its DLSS 4.5 technology, introducing new features designed to boost frame rates on RTX 50 series graphics cards. The update builds on the earlier Super Resolution release this year and focuses on improving performance through AI-driven frame generation. NVIDIA stated that the technology aims to deliver smoother path-traced gaming experiences across high-refresh displays.

The update introduces two major features, DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation 6X. These additions are intended to maximize performance in demanding gaming environments. According to NVIDIA, the features support advanced display capabilities, including 4K 240Hz OLED monitors and 1080p or 1440p displays operating at 360Hz or higher.

Dynamic Multi Frame Generation functions as an adaptive system that adjusts performance in real time. NVIDIA compared the feature to an automatic transmission system for graphics processing. Instead of applying a fixed frame multiplier, it dynamically balances refresh rate, image quality, and responsiveness. This allows the system to adapt based on workload and display specifications.

The feature also ensures that frame output does not exceed a monitor’s native refresh rate. For example, a system will not generate 240 frames per second on a 120Hz display. This approach helps optimize GPU performance while maintaining efficient resource usage. It also reduces unnecessary processing that would not improve the visible output.

The second feature, Multi Frame Generation 6X, is designed to deliver higher performance gains. Built on NVIDIA’s second-generation transformer model, it increases the frame multiplier to as much as six times. This allows the system to generate up to five additional frames for each natively rendered frame on RTX 50 series GPUs.

NVIDIA stated that this feature can boost 4K frame rates by up to 35 percent while maintaining minimal impact on responsiveness. Improvements in frame pacing and image quality also contribute to smoother visual output. These enhancements are particularly relevant for users running graphically intensive games with advanced lighting techniques.

Dynamic Frame Generation and 6X Scaling Enhance High Refresh Gaming

Despite these gains, DLSS 4.5 does not increase the native rendering speed of a game. Instead, it uses artificial intelligence to generate intermediate frames between rendered ones. These frames are based on predicted motion and visual continuity within a scene. This method reduces the computational burden while improving perceived smoothness.

However, AI-generated frames can sometimes introduce visual inconsistencies. Artifacts may appear in scenes with fine details such as rain, hair, or thin objects like wires. While these issues are generally limited, they remain a known limitation of frame interpolation technologies.

The DLSS 4.5 update is now available for NVIDIA RTX 50 series graphics cards. NVIDIA also confirmed that several titles will support the new Multi Frame Generation features. These include 007 First Light, scheduled for release on May 27, Directive 8020, arriving on May 12, as well as CONTROL Resonant and Tides of Annihilation.

NVIDIA continues to expand its AI-based rendering ecosystem as part of its long-term graphics strategy. The introduction of DLSS 4.5 highlights the company’s focus on software-driven performance improvements. As adoption grows across supported titles, the technology may play a significant role in shaping future gaming performance standards.
