ultimateimp – Discord has announced it will delay the global rollout of its planned age verification system following strong user feedback and privacy concerns. The platform confirmed that the policy will now launch worldwide in the second half of 2026 rather than earlier as initially expected.
The company first introduced the idea earlier this month as part of efforts to improve protections for younger users. However, many members of the community expressed concern about being required to submit identification documents or undergo facial scanning. Critics warned that similar verification systems on other platforms have often raised privacy risks.
In response to the backlash, Discord said it will pause the worldwide launch while it revises the system. The company explained that it will continue to comply with existing laws in countries where age verification requirements already exist. Some governments have introduced regulations requiring online platforms to implement stronger safeguards for minors.
However, outside of those legally mandated regions, Discord will delay implementation until improvements are made. The company said the additional time will allow it to refine the system and provide more privacy-focused verification methods.
Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord’s co-founder and chief technology officer, outlined the company’s approach in a blog post. He explained that the system will only affect a small portion of the platform’s users.
“If you’re among the less than 10 percent of users who do need to verify, we’ll give you options designed to tell us only your age and never your identity,” Vishnevskiy wrote. The statement emphasizes the company’s goal of limiting the amount of personal information collected during verification.
New Verification Options Aim to Protect Privacy While Meeting Regulations
One of the most significant changes involves new alternatives for verifying age. Discord plans to allow users to confirm their age using a credit card rather than submitting identification documents. This option may allow people to access age-restricted features without uploading government IDs or completing facial scans.
The company also promised greater transparency about the third-party vendors that provide age verification technology. Discord said it will disclose more information about these partners and how their systems handle user data.
In addition, the company outlined stricter requirements for facial age estimation tools. Discord said it will only work with partners whose systems perform facial analysis entirely on a user’s device. This approach ensures that biometric data does not leave the user’s device or get stored on external servers.
As a result of these requirements, Discord confirmed it will not partner with Persona, a commonly used provider of facial age verification services. The company said Persona’s technology does not meet its standard for fully on-device processing.
Discord is also introducing a new feature designed to reduce the need for widespread verification within communities. The platform is developing a “spoiler channel” option that allows servers to isolate age-restricted content into specific channels. This means only users accessing those channels may need to verify their age rather than requiring verification from every member of a server.
The company also plans to publish a technical explanation of its automated age determination systems. The document will explain how the technology works and what information it processes.
Age verification laws have become increasingly common across the United States and other countries. Governments argue that such measures are necessary to protect minors from harmful online content. However, critics warn that strict verification requirements could undermine anonymity and privacy on the internet.
Discord’s decision to revise its plans reflects the broader tension between regulatory requirements and user privacy. By delaying the rollout and offering alternative verification methods, the company aims to balance stronger protections for younger users while preserving anonymity for the wider community.
