ultimateimp – The Retroid Pocket 6 has officially received support for LineageOS 23.2. Allowing users to upgrade the Android gaming handheld to Android 16 through one of the most popular custom ROM projects.
The release arrives just days after Retroid rolled out the Pocket 6’s first official over-the-air (OTA) update. While AYN also released a bug-fixing firmware update for its Odin 3 handheld.
According to the LineageOS device wiki, version 23.2 is now available for the Retroid Pocket 6. Since the handheld ships with Android 13 out of the box. The custom ROM gives users access to a newer version of Android without waiting for an official firmware upgrade from Retroid.
Beyond the operating system upgrade, LineageOS is known for delivering a cleaner Android experience. Improved performance, and better battery efficiency compared with many stock firmware releases.
The new ROM offers Pocket 6 owners another software option alongside Retroid’s official operating system.
Support Expanding to More Retroid and AYN Devices
Development is already progressing beyond the Pocket 6. A developer involved in the LineageOS project previously confirmed that support is expected to expand to the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket G2.
Meanwhile, code references within the project’s GitHub repository indicate that work has already begun on bringing LineageOS to the recently announced Retroid Pocket Nova.
The custom ROM is also being adapted for several handhelds from AYN. Including the Odin 2 series, Odin 3, and Thor. Users interested in an alternative to Android also have another option available.
Developers have successfully ported the Linux-based Rocknix operating system to many of the same handhelds. Rocknix can run directly from a microSD card and includes native Steam client support. Making it an attractive choice for users seeking a Linux-based gaming environment.
Pocket 6 and Odin 3 Receive New OTA Updates
The LineageOS release follows Retroid’s first official OTA update for the Pocket 6, released as version 1.0.0.404.
The firmware update fixes excessive battery drain when using the Retroid Dual Screen Add-on during sleep mode.
It also resolves a permission issue involving the isSafetyCenterEnabled function within PrebuiltGmsCore and the Google Play Store while correcting an incorrect lock screen text string.
Retroid also introduced two new features with the update. The first is a new gamepad takeover mode that supports vibration feedback and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller haptic functionality.
The second adds an Ultra Black mode designed specifically for the Pocket 6’s OLED display. At the same time, AYN released firmware version 1.0.0.187 for the Odin 3.
The update focuses entirely on stability improvements rather than introducing new features.
Among the fixes are an updated GPU driver (version 800.72) that resolves GPU hang issues in demanding games such as Zenless Zone Zero, a fix for silent microphone problems during WeChat voice calls, improved compatibility with AR glasses, and a solution for random crashes affecting PUBG Mobile.
The firmware also corrects inaccurate battery cutoff current readings reported by certain battery monitoring applications.
Despite these improvements, users on the Odin 3 Discord community continue to report unresolved HDR display issues and excessive fan noise.
Owners running Rocknix on the Odin 3 should also be aware of a known OTA installation issue. Before installing the latest firmware, users must restore the original bootloader using the restore_backup_abl script to ensure the update completes successfully.
With Android 16 now available through LineageOS and additional handhelds already in development, users across the Retroid and AYN ecosystems can expect broader custom ROM support in the near future.
